The Black Paintings by Francisco Goya

Francisco Goya (1746-1828) was a renowned Spanish painter and printmaker, considered one of the most important artists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His work spanned various genres, including portraiture, history painting, and printmaking.

Francisco Goya created a series of paintings known as the "Black Paintings" during his later years, likely between 1819 and 1823, when he was living in isolation on his estate outside Madrid. These paintings are characterized by their dark, haunting themes and somber tones. One famous work from this series is "Saturn Devouring His Son," depicting the mythological titan consuming one of his offspring. The Black Paintings are considered a reflection of Goya’s disillusionment and despair with the world around him. Francisco Goya created a total of fourteen "Black Paintings" during his later years. These paintings were executed directly onto the walls of his house, Quinta del Sordo, outside Madrid. However, only thirteen of these paintings survive today, as "The Dog" was removed from the wall and transferred to canvas by a subsequent owner. Series of 14 paintings are as under:
